"Hometown" (Lebanon, Oregon on Memorial Day)

The right side of this photo displays a line of flags that follow along Main Street in Lebanon, Oregon.  Hanging over the uniformed individuals is the "American Legion" sign. The American Legion originated in World War 1 to serve weary veterans, but now serves as one of the most influential non profit groups in the United States with over 13,000 posts stationed nation wide according to legion.org. May 30th (Memorial Day) was the day this image was taken - hence the flags. The Lebanon Downtown Association holds a sign up sheet called "Flags Along Main Street" which gives volunteers the opportunity to volunteer their time on days like Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and President's Day to set up flags along Main Street.

May 30, Memorial Day. The sun is out and the city of Lebanon, Oregon is bustling for a small town. Stationed along the road was a yellow ice cream trailer called "Grandma's Hometown Cones". Children and parents lined up quickly behind me so no time was waisted in asking for a portrait!

Lebanon, Oregon takes pride in their official catchphrase "the city that friendliness built".  An elderly woman walked slowly down the street. Not five minutes later, another lady pulled over that seemed to know the woman walking along the road. The woman in the vehicle called out, "Honey, do you need a ride?" The woman walking accepted and they drove away together. this is a perfect illustration of "the city that friendliness built."
